Teoksessa A Dance for Washing Machine and a Mother Greta Grinevičiūtė nostaa esiin kysymyksen, joka saattaa ensi silmäyksellä vaikuttaa banaalilta: Mikä on ensimmäinen muisto äidistäsi? Tässä maailmassa, jossa äidit ovat joko jumalattaria tai helvetin hirviöitä, on vaikea kuvitella, ettei ole lainkaan kuvaa äidistään. Miten voi elää ilman kuvaa äidistään?
Vuonna 2018 koreografi ja tanssija Greta Grinevičiūtė aloitti triptyykin esityksellä Dance for a vacuum cleaner and a father. Nyt hän esittää teossarjan toisen osan, joka jatkaa perhesiteiden analysointia. Grinevičiūtė tekee yhteistyötä tanssitaiteilija ja esiintyjä Andrius Katinasin kanssa, joka esiintyy teoksessa Helsingissä kuvatuissa videoissa ja äänenä puhelinsoitossa. Heidän yhteistyönsä ei ainoastaan pitänyt teoksen ideaa elossa, vaan toi siihen uuden muodon, joka heijastelee myös Grinevičiūtėn suhdetta isäänsä.
Teos nähdään Nykytaidetila Kutomolla osana Turussa 10.–12.4.2025 järjestettävää kansainvälistä Baltic Take Over -festivaalia.

Baltic Take Over: Greta Grinevičiūtė: A Dance for Washing Machine and a Mother
I dance for the washing machine and for you because I do not remember any of our conversations. I don’t even know if there were any. People say that you loved me. But I don‘t remember nor being together with you, nor your voice or your touches. I only have old photos. I look at them, I see your sad face and I keep reminiscing the only memory of you. And I am getting scared, because maybe the things that I remember never even happened. Therefore I dance. I dance for you. Because we will never get to talk again, but maybe we can still dance together.
In A Dance for Washing Machine and a Mother, Greta Grinevičiūtė raises a question that at first glance might seem banal: What is the first memory of your mother? In this world where mothers are either goddesses or monsters from hell, not having any picture of a mother at all is hard to imagine. How does one live without a portrait of their mother?
In 2018, choreographer and dancer Greta Grinevičiūtė started a triptych with the performance Dance for a vacuum cleaner and a father. Now she is presenting the second part, which continues to analyze the family bond. Grinevičiūtė collaborates with contemporary dance creator and performer, lecturer Andrius Katinas, who in this performance appears in videos made in Helsinki or as a voice in a phone call. Their collaboration at the time of the first quarantine not only kept the idea of this work alive but brought a new form to it that also echoes Grinevičiūtė’s relation to her father.
The piece will be presented at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo as part of the international Baltic Take Over festival taking place in Turku on 10.–12.4.2025.

Greta Grinevičiūtė is a performer, dancer, theatre and film actress, choreographer, one of the main creators of MMLAB, co-founder of the independent contemporary dance art organization Be Company, PhD student, lecturer, and dance filmmaker. Grinevičiūtė’s work mostly addresses intimacy and fragility: using the details of her biography, Grinevičiūtė analyses human relationships, and more specifically, her relationships with her loved ones in her works.
MMLAB (Arts and Science Lab) is a professional theatre based in Vilnius, Lithuania. It was launched with creative projects where artists and scientists experimented together with new forms and subjects for the theatre works.
