Ehkä-tuotannon yleisötyöntekijä-kirjoittaja Heidi Horila on kevään 2025 aikana seurannut Nelia Naumasen ja Nellie Björklundin uuden teoksen The Heart Vol. 2 valmistumista Nykytaidetila Kutomon residenssissä. Maaliskuussa Horila haastatteli Naumasta ja Björklundia ja kirjoitti keskustelun pohjalta jutun. Ehkä-tuotannon osatuottama teos kantaesitetään Nykytaidetila Kutomolla osana Spring Roll festivaalin ohjelmaa lauantaina 3.5.2025.
Nelia Naumasen ja Nellie Björklundin teos kuratoitiin Ehkä-tuotannon ohjelmistoon vuoden 2024 avoimen haun Nuori tekijä-kategoriassa. Uuden tuotantokategorian myötä Ehkä pyrkii avaamaan nuorille taiteentekijöille väylän ammattikenttään tutustumiseen.

Tanssin jälkiä sydämen sykkeessä
Kun saavun Nykytaidetila Kutomon ykkösstudioon, Nelia Naumanen ja Nellie Björklund ottavat minut vastaan ja pyytävät heti alkuun keskittymään ajatukseen sydämestä ja sen kohtaamisesta tässä tilassa. He puhuvat siitä, miten muodostamme yhdessä sydänten verkoston, joka kuljettaa ja välittää sähköenergiaa kaikille sen osallisille ja sen läheisyydessä oleville.
Kun käymme verhon taakse sisään itse sydämeen, ytimeen, tunnustelemme, miltä juuri nyt tämä tila ja sen syke meistä tuntuu.
-Katsele ja kiinnitä tilassa huomiota erilaisiin, vuosien aikana tilan pintoihin muodostuneisiin kolhuihin, kulumiin, tanssin jättämiin jälkiin, Naumanen lausuu.
Naumanen ja Björklund tutkivat ja tekevät teoksessaan The Heart Vol. 2 erilaisia tanssin jälkiä ja kerrostumia näkyväksi. On helppo havaita näitä tanssin ja liikkeen merkkejä Kutomolta, sillä olen käynyt täällä vuosikausia, katsojana ja itsekin tanssimassa.
Kaksikko tapasi Tukholman taideyliopistossa opiskellessaan samalla vuosikurssilla. Oli korona- aika ja pysyteltiin tiiviisti oman vuosikurssin kanssa.
-Huomasimme, että meitä kiinnostivat samanlaiset asiat ja aloimme työskennellä yhdessä, Björklund ja Naumanen kertovat.
Yhteistyöstä syntyi Björklundin kandidaatintyö, The Heart Vol. 1 -teos, jossa Björklund ja Naumanen veivät tanssia taideyliopiston muiden opiskelijoiden ja yleisöjen luokse. Työskentelyssä Björklundia ja Naumasta innosti tanssin rajojen pehmentäminen tekijöiden ja yleisön välillä. Tanssin sosiaalinen ulottuvuus, jaettu tanssi, johon jokainen voi osallistua ja jokaisella on pääsy.
Kutomolla tätä ajatusta jatketaan ja työstetään edelleen. Tavoitteena on luoda teoksesta lopulta kaikkien yhteiseksi muuntuva tila, vähän kuin teoksen jälkikaiku, johon voi jäädä oleskelemaan.
-Halusimme toteuttaa nämä kaksi teososaa molempien kotimaissa, ensin Tukholmassa ja nyt Turussa. Jatkamme tämän kakkososan kanssa vielä myöhemmin tänä vuonna Etelä-Ruotsissa Milvus Artistic Research Centerissä, kaksikko kertoo.
Vuonna 2023 Tukholmasta valmistuneiden tanssija-koreografien taustat tanssin parissa ovat varsin erilaiset. Naumanen on omien sanojensa mukaan uitettu tanssiin suomalaisten tanssiopistojen pyhän kolminaisuuden, eli baletin, jazzin ja nykytanssin opiskelun kautta.
Björklundilla puolestaan on vahva tausta teatterissa. Hän kertoo, että kävi nuorena jonkin verran tanssitunneilla, mutta on varsinaisesti kasvanut tanssiin isoisänsä ja isänsä kanssa.
-Meillä tanssittiin aina kotona. Tanssi on ollut iso osa kasvamistani ja identiteettiäni.
Björklundia kiehtookin tanssin ilmeneminen siellä, missä sitä yleensä ei tavata nähdä. Hän teki viime vuonna Espanjassa asuessaan lyhytelokuvan, johon haastatteli ja kuvasi ostoskeskuksessa työskentelevää ikkunanpesijää.
-Tämän vanhemman miehen tavassa pestä ikkunaa ja käyttää pesulastaa oli jotain erityisen koreografista ja tanssillista. Hän oli alkuun hieman epäluuloinen, kun lähestyin häntä ja kysyin, saisinko kuvata häntä. Jutellessamme kävi kuitenkin ilmi, että hänellä oli kuin olikin tanssiharrastusta taustallaan, Björklund naurahtaa.
Björklundin ja Naumasen taustojen erilaisuudet tuovat työskentelyyn omat haasteensa, mutta samalla siitä versoaa jotakin aivan uutta. Yhdessä on pitänyt löytää ja luoda omaa yhteistä työskentelyn tapaa ja kieltä.
Tarinankerronta on The Heart Vol. 2 -teoksessa keskeistä, ja Björklund ja Naumanen ovat halunneet tuoda teokseen mukaan sekä liikkeen että puheen tasavertaisina ilmaisuvälineinä.
Sydän on tärkeä poeettinen ja symbolinen teoksen katalysaattori.
-Vaikka teoksessa on paljon iloa, ehdottaa se myös toisenlaisia tunteita. Sydän voi särkyä, joutua ruhjeille, kehomuistot voivat tuoda tällaisia asioita pintaan. Näiden asioiden äärelle teos kutsuu yhdessä kokoontumaan, kaksikko summaa.

Heidi Horila: Nelia Naumanen ja Nellie Björklund: The Heart Vol. 2
During the winter of 2025, Ehkä-production’s writer and public engagement person Heidi Horila followed the completion of Nelia Naumanen and Nellie Björklund’s new performance The Heart Vol. 2 at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo’s residence. In March, Horila interviewed Naumanen and Björklund and wrote an article based on the discussion. The work, co-produced by Ehkä, will be premiered at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo as part of the Spring Roll festival’s program on Saturday, 3 May 2025.
The work by Nelia Naumanen and Nellie Björklund was curated into Ehkä-production’s program under the Young Maker category through the open call for 2025. With the introduction of this new production category, Ehkä aims to provide young artists a pathway to explore the professional field.
Traces of dance in the beat of a heart
When I arrive at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo, Nelia Naumanen ja Nellie Björklund are there to welcome me and ask me to focus on the thought of heart and encountering it in this very space. They talk about how we, together, form a field of hearts that transports and mediates electrical energy to all its participants and those near it.
We enter the heart’s core behind the curtain and feel how the space and its beat appears and feels to us.
-Look around you in this space and pay attention to different kinds of marks and traces in different surfaces made by dance during the years, Naumanen suggests.
Naumanen and Björklund research and make different kinds of traces and layers of dance visible in their work The Heart Vol. 2. It is quite easy to perceive these marks of dance and movement in Kutomo, since I’ve been coming here for years, as a viewer of audience and also as a dancer.
The twosome met at the Stockholm University of the Arts while studying in the same class. It was during the pandemic, and studying was strictly limited to being within one’s own class and class members.
-We noticed that we were interested in the same kind of things and started to work together, Björklund and Naumanen say.
From this collaboration was born Björklund’s bachelor’s thesis, The Heart Vol. 1. With the piece Björklund and Naumanen took dance to other students at the university. They were inspired in softening the limits of dance between authors and audiences. The social dimension of dance, that everyone can participate and have access to.
In Kutomo, this thought is being worked on further. The goal is to create a mutual space for everyone, sort of like a post-delay of the piece, where it is okay to stay and hang around.
-We wanted to carry out these two parts of the work in both our home countries, first in Stockholm and now in Turku. Later on this year, we take this second part to Milvus Artistic Research Center in southern Sweden, Björklund and Naumanen say.
The backgrounds of these two dancers, who graduated from Stockholm in 2023, in dance are very different. Naumanen tells that they’ve been trained in dance through the educational trinity of Finnish dance school system, that is ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance.
Björklund instead has a strong background in theater. She says that she took some dance lessons when she was young but has actually grown into dancing with her grandfather and father.
-There was always dance in our home. Dance has been a big part of my growth and my identity.
Björklund and Naumanen’s differences bring their own challenges to their work, but at the same time, something quite new is sprouting. They’ve had to find a common way of working together, create their own language.
Storytelling is eminent in The Heart Vol. 2, and the twosome wanted to bring both movement and speech as equal ways of manner of expression to the piece.
The heart is an important poetic and symbolic catalyst of the piece.
-Although there is a lot of joy in this piece, it also suggests different kinds of emotions. A heart can be broken, get bruised, and body memories can bring these things to surface. The work invites us to gather around these kinds of things, Björklund and Naumanen sum up.
