Himeran syyskuisella kokeellisen musiikin festivaalilla esiintyvät sellisti-säveltäjä Lucy Railton, improvisoiva kontrabasisti John Edwards, kanadalainen äänitaiteilija crys cole, yhdysvaltalainen säveltäjä ja mediataiteilija Charlie Morrow ja mikrotonaalinen tuuba-yhtye Microtub.
Festivaalin tapahtumat järjestetään Nykytaidetila Kutomolla sekä Pyhän Henrikin Ekumeenisessa Taidekappelissa Turussa 22.–24. syyskuuta 2022. Festivaalin toteuttaa Himera yhteistyössä Ehkä-tuotannon kanssa. Tapahtumaa ovat tukeneet Taiteen edistämiskeskus ja Turun kaupunki.
Himera on viiden turkulaisen musiikintekijän, Marja Ahdin, Niko-Matti Ahdin, Topias Tiheäsalon, Antti Tolvin ja Rasmus Östlingin työryhmä, jonka toiminnan ytimessä on kokeellisen ja muun musiikin festivaalin ja konserttien järjestäminen. Ryhmä on ollut aktiivinen vuodesta 2012 lähtien.

Microtub
Microtub on kolmen mikrotonaalisen tuuban musiikkia, johon yhtye on syventynyt vuodesta 2010 lähtien ainutlaatuisilla soittimillaan. Heidän musiikissaan resonanssi on keskeisellä sijalla, mutta yhtä lailla äänen sisään pääseminen; tila, jossa soitetaan, alkaa soida. Niinpä Pyhän Henrikin Ekumeeninen Taidekappeli on äärimmäisen hieno paikka kuunnella Microtubin musiikkia, jossa on aina sekä jotain tuttua että vierasta.
Himera-konserttien historiaan viitaten Microtub on esittänyt mm. Catherine Lambin musiikkia, ja yhtyeen jäsen Robin Hayward on tehnyt yhteistyötä myös Charlie Morrowin kanssa.

Lucy Railton
Lucy Railton on Berliinissä asuva sellisti, joka toimii säveltämisen, improvisaation sekä elektronisen ja elektroakustisen musiikin kentillä. Hän on erityisen kiinnostunut resonanssista, psykoakustiikasta ja mikrotonaalisuudesta, joihin hän on syventynyt esittäessään Maryanne Amacherin, Alvin Lucierin, Iannis Xenakisin ja Morton Feldmanin musiikkia.
Tällä hetkellä Railton tekee yhteistyötä mm. Rebecca Salvadorin, Farida Amadoun, Catherine Lambin, Kali Malonen, Khyam Allamin ja Stephen O’Malleyn kanssa.
Charlie Morrow
Charlie Morrow (USA, 1942) on säveltäjä, äänitaiteilija ja äänen asiantuntija, runoilija, kustantaja, graafikko, tapahtumajärjestäjä ja paljon muuta. Hän kutsuukin itseään ”monihattuiseksi”. Morrow on luonut mittavan määrän teoksia ja tapahtumia intiimin hengittävistä lauluista aina kaupungin laajuisiin musiikkihurjuuksiin asti.
Hänen yhteistyökumppaneitaan ovat olleet monet legendaariset taiteilijat, kuten Philip Corner, Alison Knowles, James Tenney, Malcolm Goldstein, John Cage, Charlotte Moorman, Jerome Rothenberg ja Allen Ginsberg.
crys cole
crys cole on Berliinissä asuva kanadalainen äänitaiteilija, joka työskentelee säveltämisen, esitysten ja ääni-installaatioiden parissa. colen työtavat nojaavat vahvasti keskittyneeseen kuunteluun, ja hän työstää teoksiaan mm. koskettelemalla ja tunnustelemalla näennäisen arkisia äänilähteitä. cole luo äänenväriltään rikkaita, sävykkään kudosmaisia kappaleita, jotka saavat korvamme virittymään uudella tavalla.
cole on esittänyt teoksiaan maailmanlaajuisesti yli kahden vuosikymmenen ajan. Soolotuotantonsa lisäksi hän esiintyy duona Oren Ambarchin kanssa ja jakaa Ora Clementi -nimisen yhtyeen James Rushfordin kanssa. cole on tehnyt yhteistyötä mm. Francis Plagnen, Tetuzi Akiyaman, Leif Elggrenin, David Behrmanin, Annea Lockwoodin, Keith Rowen, Jessika Kenneyn, David Rosenboomin ja Lance Austin Olsenin kanssa.
John Edwards
John Edwards (Englanti, 1964) on oman aikamme yksi aktiivisimpia ja monipuolisimpia improvisoivia muusikkoja. Edwardsin kontrabassolla on 90-luvulta lähtien ollut keskeinen rooli Lontoon improvisoidun musiikin kentällä. Hän on kysytty ja arvostettu yhtyesoittaja, joka on vuosikymmenten aikana esiintynyt lukemattomien muusikoiden kanssa soittokumppaneinaan mm. Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee, Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke, Louis Moholo ja Shabaka Hutchings.
Edwards tunnetaan myös intensiivisenä sooloesiintyjänä, jonka keskeisin kiinnostuksen kohde on aina ollut improvisaatio – hetkessä tapahtuva säveltäminen.
Himera: Himera Festival 2022
The annual Himera Festival for experimental music presents British cellist and composer Lucy Railton, British double bass improviser John Edwards, Canadian sound artist crys cole, American composer and multimedia artist Charlie Morrow and microtonal tuba ensemble Microtub.
Himera Festival takes place at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo and St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel in Turku on 22–24 September 2022. The festival is organized by Himera in collaboration with Ehkä-production. The event is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Turku.
Himera is a collective of five Turku-based musicians Marja Ahti, Niko-Matti Ahti, Topias Tiheäsalo, Antti Tolvi and Rasmus Östling that organizes a festival and concerts of experimental and other music. The group has been active since 2012.

Microtub
Microtub consists of three microtonal tubas. Since 2010 they have explored microtonal music with their unique instruments. Resonance has a central place in their music, as well as the sounding of the very room in which it is presented. St. Henry´s Ecumenical Art Chapel offers a beautiful space for this alien yet strangely familiar music to unfold in.
As a link to past events in the Himera concert series, Microtub has performed music by Catherine Lamb and trio member Robin Hayward has previously collaborated with Charlie Morrow.

Lucy Railton
Lucy Railton is cellist based in Berlin who works in composition, improvisation and electronic/electroacoustic music. She has released her own music on Modern Love, Editions Mego – GRM Portraits, PAN (with Peter Zinovieff), Takuroku and SN Variations (with Kit Downes) and is currently focused on projects with Rebecca Salvadori, Farida Amadou, Catherine Lamb, Kali Malone, Khyam Allami and Stephen O’Malley whilst developing new specialized work for the ensemble of Centro Musica (Modena, IT) and with Max Eilbacher a new work for Issue Project Room (New York, US).
Alongside these projects she is involved in the presentation of music by composers such as Maryanne Amacher, Alvin Lucier, Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman and music from the Just Intonation canon, and her engagement with this repertoire has occasioned extensive explorations of resonance, psychoacoustics, synthesis and microtonality, preoccupations that are ever present in her own work.
Charlie Morrow
Charlie Morrow (US, 1942) is a composer, sound artist and sound specialist, poet, publisher, graphic artist, event organiser and much more. He has called himself ‘multi-hatted’ (although he mostly wears a signature bowler hat) and a ‘frame-maker’, authoring a dazzling multitude of works and events, from intimate breathing chants to city-wide musical extravaganzas. His collaborators have included many legendary artists, such as Philip Corner, Alison Knowles, James Tenney, Malcolm Goldstein, John Cage, Charlotte Moorman, Jerome Rothenberg and Allen Ginsberg.
crys cole
crys cole is a Canadian sound artist, currently based in Berlin, working in composition, performance and sound installation. Working in modalities that emphasize focussed listening, she develops pieces through haptic gestures and seemingly mundane sources to create texturally nuanced works that continuously retune the ear.
Cole has been performing and exhibiting her work worldwide for over two-decades. Alongside her solo practice she has ongoing collaborations with Oren Ambarchi, and with James Rushford under the name ’Ora Clementi’. She has collaborated with a wide array of artists over the years including Francis Plagne, Tetuzi Akiyama, Leif Elggren, David Behrman, Annea Lockwood, Keith Rowe, Jessika Kenney, David Rosenboom, Lance Austin Olsen and many more.
John Edwards
John Edwards (UK, 1964) is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand for over 30 years, he plays regularly with Evan Parker, Joe McPhee, Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke, Louis Moholo, Shabaka Hutchings to name but a few. He often works with film composers and contemporary dance companies. Improvisation, instant composition is his main focus.
